Johnson & Johnson, working in partnership with the Society for the Arts in Healthcare, seeks to promote the use of the arts to enhance the healthcare experience for patients, their families, and caregivers. From 2001 - 2008, we have provided funding to 115 programs in the US and Canada representing leading models and initiatives in high quality healthcare through the use of arts. Proposals are now being sought from healthcare and/or arts organizations that have established arts in healthcare programs with evidence of initial impact.

Grants Available from the Florence Tyson Fund

The Florence Tyson Fund is actively seeking applications for grants. The fund was created in 2004 to support deserving creative arts therapy work.

The Mission of the Fund is:
• to support therapists and clinical programs that provide creative arts therapies—music, dance, drama, art and poetry therapy--to people in the community who suffer from, or are at risk for psychiatric problems, such as depression, anxiety, or severe mental illnesses.

• to inform health care professionals, social workers, teachers, and others about the benefits of community-based creative arts therapies for their clients; and to promote the utilization of these therapies in community settings

• to encourage and support research on the clinical efficacy of creative arts therapies in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and related psychiatric problems, in community settings.
How to Apply for a Grant
How can I or my organization apply for funding from the Tyson Fund for Creative Arts Therapies?

To apply for funding, send a letter of application to:

The letter should be 3-5 pages long, and should describe the individual or organization that is applying for funding, the need for funding, and the way in which the proposed project will advance the work that was begun by Florence Tyson and is carried forward her colleagues in the field of creative arts therapy. Proof of non-profit status, if applicable, and an indication of other funding or organization resources for the project should be included. Letters of application may be submitted at any time.

What is the average size of the grant that will be awarded by the Tyson Fund?
In its first year, the Fund plans to award several grants of between $3,000 and 5,000. As the fund grows, awards will grow accordingly.

What are examples of projects that might be funded?
The Board and advisors to the Board have identified several types of projects that will be considered. Among these are scholarships to provide creative arts therapies for patients with significant need; funding for workshops or symposia for professionals who provide therapy for psychiatric patients in the community; funding of educational materials to advance practice in the field of community-based music therapy.
