Hill Day & Congressional Education Sessions – March 13,
2008 As creative art therapists, we facilitate communication through the arts on a daily basis. This work puts us in a unique position to advocate for our professions! Like the creative arts therapies, advocacy is an art form as basic as speaking on behalf of oneself or others to get something done. On March 13, 2008, The National Coalition of Creative Arts Therapies Associations will be hosting Congressional Education Sessions (briefings) on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to make our voices heard and educate Congress about the work of CATs across the nation. The Education Sessions, sponsored by NY Senator Hillary Clinton, will feature a panel with presentations by the Presidents of the American Art Therapy Association, The American Dance Therapy Association, The National Association for Drama Therapy, The American Music Therapy Association, The National Association for Poetry Therapy, and The American Association for Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama. The panel will focus on Autism and Post Traumatic Stress Disorders. The sessions will be attended by Congressional members and their staff. All creative arts therapists, professionals and consumers are also encouraged to attend! Hill visits will be made to congressional offices with prepared speaking points about relevant issues to creative arts therapists and Congress. For registration information, please check back here for updates or contact the Governmental Affairs Chair of your Association. Creative Arts Therapy Week (March 9-15, 2008) is an opportunity to sponsor special workshops, exhibitions, career days, etc., for the public and other professionals in your communities. Consider expanding coalition building with other creative arts therapies, healthcare and arts organizations, being visible with the media, promoting your field and creating awareness about your work during CATs week. This will be the first Hill Day officially sponsored by NCCATA. Creative arts therapists have collaborated together for Hill events in previous years and our hope is that this event will help move us toward our goal of a joint creative arts therapy conference in 2011. Mark your calendars to find your thrill on Capitol Hill! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BRONX, NY: CELEBRATE
CREATIVE ARTS THERAPIES WEEK Congratulations on Creative Arts Therapies Week! We are happy to inform you of our Creative Arts Therapies Week celebration. On March 4 the Creative Arts Therapies Department of Bronx Psychiatric Center celebrated Creative Arts Therapies Week, as we do each year. (Only this year it was one week early due to scheduling). We hosted a special 40th Anniversary Reunion with a light lunch, presentations and a film of a movement choir led by Irmgarde Bartenief for the 1980 Regional Dance Therapy Conference at Bronx Psychiatric Center. Many former staff members, who have been pioneers in the field attended, including Miriam Berger, Claire Schmais, Elissa Queyquep White (the daughters of Estelle Bellomo also attended) to celebrate their work in the fields of dance, music, art and drama therapy and to acknowledged the achievements of our department in terms of clinical work, innovation and education. We are proud to be carrying on the tradition of serving the severely mentally ill population in the Bronx. Sincerely yours, Gillian
